Attention please, if you will

We can’t pay attention anymore, and content design is going to have to deal with it

There is a scene I keep replaying in my head, not from a film or a show, but from my own living room. A TV is on. Something is playing. And without consciously deciding to do so, my hand has picked up my phone, and I am scrolling. Not because the show is boring. Not because I am waiting for something. Just because one screen was no longer enough.

I suspect you have been there too. Maybe you are watching something on your laptop, but you have three browser tabs open, one of which is definitely social media. Maybe you listen to podcasts while doing something else, catching maybe half of what is being said. We are all doing it, all the time, and we have started to feel vaguely uncomfortable admitting how normal it has become.

The question worth asking is not just what this says about us as individuals. The deeper question is what it means for the people building the products, content, interfaces, and experiences that compete for our fractured attention every single day.


What is actually happening to our attention

Let us start with the science, because this is not a feelings-based problem. Research confirms what we are living through.

The Nielsen Norman Group’s 2026 Digital Focus Report, which surveyed 67,000 screen users, found that average screen-based attention has dropped to 43 seconds, down from 47 seconds in 2024. That is already a strikingly short window, but on short-form video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, the effective engagement window narrows to around 5.3 seconds if there is no strong visual hook in the opening two seconds of content.

A study from the Karolinska Institutet tracked more than 8,000 children aged 9 to 14 and found that frequent social media use was associated with a gradual increase in symptoms of inattention. The same link was not found for television or video games, which suggests something specific about the interaction model of social media, not just screen time in general, is shaping how young brains learn to focus.

And it is not just children. Research published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking found that heavier media multitaskers perceived the cost of cognitive effort as higher during tasks, meaning that people who regularly split their attention across multiple streams start finding sustained single-focus effort genuinely more difficult. The brain, like any system, adapts to how it is used.


The nervous system is taking the hit

The effects go beyond productivity. This is where it starts to get medically relevant.

Digital overstimulation can be understood as exposure to an excessive volume, velocity, and variety of stimuli that the nervous system cannot process quickly enough. Over time, this pattern activates the body’s stress response. Notifications and alerts train the brain to stay in a state of hyper-vigilance, because any incoming signal could be important or rewarding. The prefrontal cortex, the region responsible for executive functions like planning, decision-making, and emotional regulation, becomes chronically taxed.

Elevated cortisol levels, which are a physiological consequence of this state, are associated with anxiety, irritability, and difficulty managing emotions. Research shows that Americans now average more than 11 hours of daily screen interaction, well above any threshold that could be considered balanced. And studies demonstrate significant improvements in mental health when social media consumption is reduced to around 30 minutes a day.

The result is a feedback loop that is genuinely hard to break. Overstimulation degrades our capacity for self-regulation. Degraded self-regulation makes it harder to resist the pull of more stimulation. And so the cycle continues.


The multitasking myth we cannot let go of

Here is where we need to be honest about something. We are not actually multitasking. Nobody is.

Neuroscience is unambiguous on this: humans cannot perform two cognitively demanding tasks simultaneously. What we call multitasking is rapid task-switching, and it comes with a measurable performance cost every single time. Only about 2-2.5% of people are genuine “supertaskers” who can sustain dual-task performance without the usual degradation.

For the rest of us, the cost is real. Heavy media multitaskers are more susceptible to interference from irrelevant stimuli, both in their environment and in their own memory. A landmark study from Stanford, published in PNAS, found that chronic media multitasking impairs cognitive control in ways that persist beyond the multitasking itself, making it progressively harder to filter out irrelevant information even when you are trying to focus on a single task.

So when I am watching a show while scrolling, I am not being efficient. I am doing both things worse, and I am training myself to be less capable of doing either well on its own.

The entertainment industry has not ignored any of this. It has quietly adapted to it. The practice even has a name: second-screen viewing, which describes the now-ubiquitous habit of using a smartphone or tablet simultaneously with a primary screen. According to Nielsen, 88% of Americans use a second device during their viewing time, and 76% of those are on social platforms while watching. Netflix has responded to this reality at the script level: screenwriters who have worked with the company report that a common note from executives is to “have this character announce what they’re doing so that viewers who have this program on in the background can follow along.” The result is television that is intentionally engineered for distraction, with more expository dialogue, repeated plot points, and frequent voice-overs to keep the half-attentive viewer oriented. Shows like Emily in Paris or Virgin River are often cited as examples: light on narrative complexity, high on surface-level pleasure, easy to follow with one eye on your feed. Whether that is a creative compromise or simply a genre adapting to its audience is a fair debate, but it tells you something important about where we are.


The dopamine architecture underneath all of this

Understanding why we end up here requires understanding how modern digital products are built.

Social media platforms operate on what psychologist Adam Alter calls “ludic loops,” cycles of behavior that keep users engaged without ever reaching satisfaction. The mechanism is variable reward, the same principle that makes slot machines psychologically compelling. You never know when the next scroll will bring a post that delights you, a like on your photo, or a message from someone you care about. That unpredictability triggers dopamine release in the brain’s reward pathway, which is powerful precisely because it is intermittent.

UX elements such as notification badges, haptic feedback, colored icons, and subtle animations serve as micro-rewards and sensory cues that reinforce these patterns. Infinite scrolling removes the natural stopping point that a finite feed or a numbered page would provide. Features engineered for FOMO, the fear of missing out, apply social pressure to stay connected.

Research published in Behavioral Addictions in the Age of Social Media documented that these platforms activate the same brain regions involved in substance addiction. That is not a metaphor. The neurological parallels are measurable, particularly in people who develop what researchers now recognize as problematic usage patterns.

The design choices here are not accidental. They are the result of continuous A/B testing optimized for time on platform. The ethical problem is that optimizing for engagement means optimizing for dopamine spikes, and the companies profiting from that optimization are not the ones paying the psychological cost.


What this means for content and content design

If you work in content design, UX writing, marketing, journalism, entertainment, or, honestly, any field that produces things for people to read, watch, or interact with, this is your problem to think about.

The old model, where you wrote something good and expected people to sit with it, no longer reflects how most people consume most content most of the time. Attention is shorter, more fractured, and more conditional than it used to be. Users are not passively waiting to receive your message. They are scanning, filtering, and deciding within seconds whether to stay or leave.

This does not mean you have to write everything in three-word sentences and cover every screen in bold bullet points. That approach trades one problem for another. What it does mean is that every word has to earn its place. Every screen has to answer the right question at the right moment. Every interaction has to feel like it is working with the user’s goals, not against them.

The principle I keep coming back to is contextual relevance. Content needs to be relevant to the user’s intent at all times. As I wrote in my piece on UX writing, the craft is not about being clever or filling space. It is about giving users exactly what they need, at the moment they need it, in language that does not make them work hard to understand. Clarity is not a consolation prize for writers who lack personality. Clarity is the personality.

This applies whether you are writing interface copy, a marketing email, a help article, or a product description. The question at every touchpoint is the same: what does this person know right now, and what do they need to know to take the next step? Nothing more, nothing less.


When entertainment has to become part of the ecosystem

The same logic applies to how brands approach advertising and entertainment content.

The days of the 30-second ad that interrupts programming and asks for your full attention are over, not because the format is dead, but because it no longer matches the attention architecture of most audiences. If someone is watching your content on a laptop with a social media tab a click away, you have a matter of seconds to give them a reason to stay.

This does not automatically mean shorter is always better. It means that the more relevant it is, the better. A well-placed, genuinely useful notification can hold attention longer than a flashy but irrelevant one. A recommendation that accurately reflects what you have actually been looking at will earn more clicks than one that is technically personalized but clearly operating on stale data.

The brands and products that are doing this well are the ones that have stopped thinking about engagement as something they capture and started thinking about it as something they earn, moment by moment, based on whether they are genuinely adding value to what the user was already trying to do.


The streak trap: when hooking users means harming them

Here is the tension at the center of all of this, and I want to be direct about it.

If you get the contextual relevance right, if your content is always genuinely useful, your notifications are always well-timed, your recommendations are always accurate, you can build something close to a habit. Users return not because they feel compelled to, but because coming back has repeatedly paid off. That is a genuine product achievement, built on something real.

But there is a line between building healthy habits and engineering compulsion, and that line gets crossed more often than most product teams would like to admit.

Duolingo is the example I think about most here. The streak mechanic, which tracks consecutive days of practice and penalizes you if you miss one, is designed to keep users returning. It works, in the narrow sense that it drives daily active users. But ask anyone who has used Duolingo for more than a few weeks, and you will hear something interesting: the notifications become nagging. The streak becomes anxiety. The sense that you are learning shifts into a sense that you are just protecting a number. Users talk about feeling guilty for missing a day, resentful of the app’s tone, and eventually burned out in a way that makes them less likely to engage with language learning at all, not more.

That is the dark side of the streak. It optimizes for a metric while eroding the underlying motivation it was supposed to support.


What a healthier version looks like

The eBay app is my go-to example of this done right, and I mean that genuinely, not as a paid endorsement.

The notifications are infrequent enough that when one arrives, it gets attention. They are relevant enough that they usually reflect something I have actually been browsing or bidding on. And the system observably learns from how I respond to them, reducing the frequency of things I ignore and increasing the relevance of what surfaces. As a result, I trust the notifications. I open them. I engage with the app on its terms because its terms happen to align with mine.

That alignment, between what the product wants me to do and what I actually want to do, is the goal. When it works, you do not need compulsion. You do not need streaks, guilt-tripping, or escalating push notification volume. You need to be useful, to be timely, and to keep getting better at both over time.


The path forward

The challenge for anyone working on digital products right now is to hold two things in tension simultaneously: the reality that attention is short and fractured, which demands economy and clarity in everything you produce, and the knowledge that exploiting that fragmentation for short-term engagement is both harmful to users and ultimately bad for brands.

The answer is not to design for dopamine spikes. The answer is to design for trust. Clear, concise, contextual content that respects users’ time and intelligence. Notifications that arrive because they are useful, not because an algorithm decided Tuesday is a good day for re-engagement. Recommendations that feel like a knowledgeable friend made them, not like a data model optimized for click-through rate.

This is harder to build and harder to measure in the short term. But users who feel respected keep coming back of their own accord. And users who feel manipulated, even if they cannot name exactly why, eventually leave.

We are all navigating the same overstimulated, hyper-connected environment. The products and content that will earn sustained attention over time are those that acknowledge that reality honestly and design for it with care.
